Winter School Break Events for Kids

If you are planning activities for children who will be out of school between Christmas and New Year’s, the library has some events for you!

Friday Dec. 22 at 3:00 pm: Family Friendly Friday Film: Elf. We’ll be showing this PG-rated film to an all-ages crowd in the Hermann Room; small children should be accompanied by an adult. The film runs 1 hour 35 minutes. We encourage you to register.

Tuesday Dec. 26, 3:30-5:00 pm: Block Party: Legos in the Library. Don’t bring your own Legos, but come play with ours! Join us in the Hermann Room for free play, drop-in. We do have Duplo for the littlest builders.

Wednesday Dec. 27, 11:00 am: Children’s Singalong with Lori Pilla. We’ll sing traditional children’s songs and folk songs. This event is aimed at children 4-9 but all are welcome. No registration is required; just come by the Children’s Room.

Thursday Dec. 28, 1:30-3:00 pm: Family Game Play in the Children’s Room. Drop by the Children’s Room to play board or card games specially selected for family fun. All ages are welcome but small children should be accompanied by an adult.

Dungeons and Dragons Club!

Come join us for our third meeting of the Dungeons and Dragons club on November 8, 2023 (a Wednesday)! Players of all levels of experience are eagerly welcome. The adventure of your imagination begins at 3:00 PM in the Young Adult Room at Falmouth Public Library and ends at 4:00 PM. Refreshments will be available! In this meeting we will get our characters ready for action and go over any important details as we jump into our first campaign! Since 1974, people (and more importantly, their imaginations) have been enjoying Dungeons and Dragons.

The club will be meeting monthly and newcomers are more than welcome! It will only make the adventure that much more fun!

Dungeons and Dragons!

Perhaps you’ve heard of Dungeons and Dragons through shows like Stranger Things or maybe you watch Critical Role or Dimension 20?  Despite the flood of podcasts, videos, streamers, and overall content revolving around Dungeons and Dragons, starting up with your own characters and campaign can be a challenge. The Falmouth Public Library is here to help buff your knowledge and make the challenge rating of Dungeons and Dragons easier to take on!
 
Join us in the first steps of your Dungeons and Dragons journey! If you’ve ever been curious about trying out this popular tabletop role-playing game or if you want to connect with players and learn more, our upcoming programs for teens and young adults should be right for you.  
 
Note: September 26th and October 17th are early release days for Falmouth Public Schools.
 

Intro to Dungeons and Dragons

On September 26th we’ll be going over the basics for understanding Dungeons and Dragons.  We’ll cover everything from basic rules, what a session zero is, how to approach character creation, and more.  Starting and maintaining a campaign can be daunting, but we’re here to help smooth the bumps in the road and make this monster of a game a bit more approachable.  Pizza and refreshments will be provided!  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

Follow up with us on October 17th for a program dedicated to creating your very own Dungeons and Dragons character.  Whether it’s your first character or you have any questions about making a character and bringing them to life, we’ll cover the basic topics and dive into anything you might want to know more about.  There are many ways to make and play your character so come by with a blank slate or with character ideas in mind and we’ll help you craft your character sheet!  Snacks and refreshments will be provided!  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.
 

Bike to the Library Day: Saturday May 20!

On Saturday May 20 you’re invited to ride your bike to the Main Branch of the Library! From 10aam-2pm we’ll have a little pop-up event focused on the fun of bicycling.

We’ll have the Book Bike out on the Library Lawn for intrepid riders to try, as well as Lawn Games for all ages, and a display of books about bicycling that you can check out on the spot!

Everyone arriving by bicycle is eligible for one of our in-demand library octopus tentacle stickers.

Rain will cancel this event.

Chess for all Ages

We are delighted to welcome chess expert Glenn Davison back, on Tuesday evening, January 24th at 6 pm, for a Zoom lesson-there will be also be an option to watch it from here, in the Hermann Room! Click here to register and get the Zoom link.

Partly due to a very popular (and Emmy and Golden Globe-winning!) miniseries on Netflix called “The Queen’s Gambit,” about a woman who breaks gender barriers in the male-dominated world of chess, chess has undergone a bit of a renaissance: many shops have sold out of chess sets! As Glenn says, there are many good messages in the show including reading, studying, preparation, learning, and practice.

Glenn is a lifelong chess player who has taught dozens of chess classes in Massachusetts resulting in hundreds of chess players and multiple chess clubs. He specializes in animated online chess classes that everyone can enjoy, often with grandparents learning at the same time as their grandchildren.

This class teaches the fundamentals of chess. In a little over an hour, you will learn the basics of playing chess including setting up, using the pawns and other pieces, special moves, tips and even how to win a game of chess in four moves.

Since teaching is done online with examples, interaction, animations and quizzes, a chess set is unnecessary. If you watch it here, though, you can play along with one of ours!

This event is free and appropriate for adults, teens and children ages 8 and up, and is sponsored by the Trustees of the Falmouth Public Library.  Registration is required before the event. Click here to register, or contact the reference department at 508-457-2555 x 7.

Library Lawn Games on Mondays

COME GET YOUR GAME ON!

From July 11th through August 29th, stop by the Falmouth Public Library lawn on Mondays from 1pm to 3pm (weather permitting) to play some of our new, fun, outdoor games!

We’ll have Cornhole, Giant Checkers, Giant 4-In-A-Row, Giant Jenga, Giant Left Center Right, Giant Yard Dice, Kan Jam and Spikeball!
