Take Flight, on Wing of Song: a Violin Concert with Joshua Peckins

We are thrilled to welcome award-winning concert violinist Joshua Peckins back for a concert on Saturday, September 21st from 3-4 pm! Please register by clicking here. His previous appearances here were widely attended and loved. This concert will have something for everyone, from Bach’s glorious, final Partita for Solo Violin, to cutting-edge modernism combining the violin with recorded bird song, a fresh take on a centuries-old chord progression that drove medieval audiences wild, and a transcription from the beloved Spanish guitar music “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”. The repertoire details are: J.S. Bach: Partita No. 3 in E Major, Carola Bauckholt: Doppelbelichtung, Krzysztof Penderecki: La Follia and Francisco Tarrega: Recuerdos de la Alhambra.

Joshua has been among the most active recitalists in New England, performing solo concerts of “particular brilliance” (Worcester Telegram) and with “a gift for capturing audiences’ attention” (Backyard News). He has presented solo recitals nationally and internationally in over 30 venues, including the renowned Figaro Hall of Palace Pálffy (where Mozart himself presented his “The Marriage of Figaro”), Crystal Hall in Japan and the Haydn and Mendelssohn Halls in Austria, as well on the Artist Series of the Bled Festival in Slovenia, the Salzburg Festival at the Mozarteum, the Orford Festival in Canada, and the Cervo Festival in Italy. The American Healthcare System

We are happy to welcome Dr. Edward Hoffer on Tuesday evening, September 10th at 7 pm, to talk about the American healthcare system. This talk will focus on why Americans pay more than citizens of any other country for health care and yet have, at best, mediocre health statistics, and will suggest both global solutions and practical things you can do to pay less and get better care. Click here to register. Please note that this will not be recorded or on Zoom by the library-Falmouth Community Television may come film for later viewing.

Dr. Edward Hoffer is a graduate of MIT and Harvard Medical School and did his residency and fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. For 45 years he combined clinical practice of Internal Medicine and Cardiology with research on the applications of computers and AI to medical care, and continues to work half-time at the MGH Lab of Computer Science. He has written and lectured extensively on the problems of the American healthcare “non-system.”

Rescuing Morgan Author Talk with Dan Perdios

Local Penn Grant Award winning author will be giving a talk about his newest book, Rescuing Morgan on Tuesday, August 6 from 6-8 p. It is a true story of how rescuing an abused Golden Retriever changed his life: When love is just the beginning on this heartwarming journey with unexpected twists and turns producing valuable life lessons for both Morgan and his new Dad. At turns compassionate, insightful, and hilarious, Rescuing Morgan shows how love ultimately triumphs over abuse and how grief can strengthen, not break, the heart.

A portion of the proceeds from the book sales at this event will benefit Dogs for Better Lives.

When Dan Perdios first meets Sparky, an abused, year-old Golden puppy from a tough neighborhood, he doesn’t know what to think, even though he had previously raised two Golden Retrievers. Full of mischief, quirks, and a fear of stairs, Sparky disrupts his life from the moment he enters it, and soon earns a new name: Morgan, after the spiced rum pirate. Rescuing Morgan details Morgan’s first years, as both puppy and dad test each other, compromise, adapt, and ultimately accept life on life’s terms. With tremendous amounts of love (and patience and discipline), Dan is able to provide Morgan with a home that heals his past and gives him a future where he can thrive.

Copies of the books will be available for purchase by Eight Cousins at the event.  Please register by clicking the button below.

Lawn Concert, Matt York, on Tuesday 8/20!

This has been rescheduled from July as it rained that day!

We are excited to welcome back longtime New England singer/musician/author Matt York for another live, outdoor acoustical performance on the lawn on Tuesday evening, July 23rd from 6-7:30 pm Bring your chair or blanket! The concert will be canceled in the event of rain.

Matt will perform a mix of roots, country and Americana music from the past sixty years. Fans of Neil Young, Tom Petty, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and more will be sure to enjoy this free concert. Check out his site here for more about him!

York was recently nominated for the Boston Music Award for Best Country Artist for the second consecutive year and his album Gently Used was just named one of the Patriot Ledger’s best albums of 2022. The Boston Herald said of his album, “Boston, Texas”, that the singer-songwriter uses basic building blocks-Buddy Holly’s chords, Hank Williams’ swagger, Steve Earle’s boozy wisdom, Paul Westerberg’s straight-up drunk wisdom-to construct an album of beauty, optimism and heartbreak”.

A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home.  Winner of the American Book Award, among other honors (2020)

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

One of the greatest books in American literature, or problematic? Or both? Let’s talk about it, and then read James next month! This 1884 classic is told from the point of view of Huck Finn, a barely literate teen who fakes his own death to escape his abusive, drunken father. He encounters a runaway slave named Jim, and the two embark on a raft journey down the Mississippi River. (1884)

James by Percival Everett

A brilliant, action-packed reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and darkly humorous, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view. Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon , James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature. (2024)

Real Americans by Rachel Khong

Real Americans is a multigenerational novel about privilege, identity and the illusions of the American dream. Its Chinese-American characters are brought into contact with fabulous wealth – a prototypical stroke of luck. But their resulting choices demonstrate how the obsessive pursuit of money and control can warp a life, and what it might take to reject this overabundance. (2024)
