Master Gardener Drop-In Help

Volunteers from the Cape Cod Master Gardeners program are beginning a new weekly drop-in service at the library. They will be available at a table in the Katherine Lee Bates entryway of the Main Library, every Wednesday from 2-4pm starting July 20, 2022, to help you with questions related to gardening.

Hydrangeas not blooming? Deer stripping young trees? Tomatoes cracking? Borers in your squash vines? Bunny problems?  They’ve seen it all and can provide advice and commiseration. They can also recommend soil testing and advise about tick bite prevention.

Drop by every Wednesday between 2 and 4 PM. It’s fine to bring photos or even part of your actual plant so they can help troubleshoot!

Postcards from Falmouth: Falmouth Public Library

If you’ve ever wanted a firsthand account of how FPL acquired our historic postcard collection, look no further than this oral history with Library Director Linda Collins. She charts the library’s route from the Falmouth Library Society of 1792 to the FPL of today, a place where you can dive into whalers’ logbooks, play Giant Jenga, borrow a sewing machine, and, of course, browse thousands of postcards online.

“The library appropriation is only 1.5% of the town budget,” she says. “It is a real deal for the residents of Falmouth […] there’s truly something for everyone.”

Wild About Harry and A Golden Retriever and His Two Dads

On Friday July 15, at 2:00 PM in the Hermann Meeting Room, we’ll be hosting a film screening and a book signing! Join producer James Egan for a screening of the film Wild About Harry, followed by a book signing by Dan Perdios of A Golden Retriever & His Two Dads: An Adventure on Cape Cod, whose story takes place on the set of Wild About Harry!

Set in 1973 and inspired by true experiences of filmmaker Gwen Wynne, Wild About Harry tells the story of the havoc wreaked in a teenage girl’s life when she discovers her widowed father is gay. Alternately comic and tragic, the film captures the homophobia of the time and shows how far society has come. The backdrop of small town Cape Cod will bring back memories as well. The film stars Tate Donovan, runs 83 minutes, and is rated PG-13. It is suitable for adult and older teen audiences.

A Golden Retriever & His Two Dads shows that when a Golden Retriever plays matchmaker,
anything is possible! A Golden Retriever named Willy introduces two guys who become his Dads. Together they take off to Cape Cod to make a film. Dan Perdios will read from and sign copies of his book, available for purchase through Eight Cousins.

Register online to attend or call the library at 508-457-2555 X7.

Upper Cape Camera Club Exhibit: Cape Cod at Night

The Upper Cape Camera Club has been holding their annual juried exhibit at the Library every July since 2013. We’re happy to welcome them back this year! This year the theme of the Exhibit is Cape Cod at night. We offer some teasers in this post of the works on display. Summer or winter, the Cape sparkles in the evening.

Come in and wander the Art Walk around the exterior of the Adult wing of the library see all the photographs on display and choose your own favorite! The jury winners, as well as favorites picked by Library staff, will be announced once judging has concluded. The exhibit will be up all July.

Postcards from Falmouth: St. Barnabas Church

By any measure, St. Barnabas Church is distinct. Reverend Will Mebane, Jr. recounts the history of its founding: how the Beebe family pushed to establish the parish, and chose Gothic Revivalist architect Henry Vaughan to build a church unlike any other in Falmouth.

“We like to be known as the parish of the community,” he says, “so we are constantly opening our doors and welcoming nonprofit organizations and other entities to use our beautiful campus.” In the summer months especially, that campus is a hub of activity – for example, did you know that the 70th annual Strawberry Festival was celebrated this June?

Explore the oral history and digital exhibit, and learn for yourself how St. Barnabas became part of the fabric of Falmouth’s community!

Postcards from Falmouth: West Falmouth Library

The West Falmouth Library is a resource built by and for its community. From its humble beginning as a club for sharing books and cultural education, it grew into a well-loved non-profit whose programs and fundraisers draw audiences year after year. Check out our oral history interview with Charlie McCaffrey, former president of the Library Board, to learn about the way those outreach efforts are guided by the library’s philosophy.

“When the library was built in 1895, the main building had two rooms of approximate equal size,” he says. “One had the books, and the other was a community room […]. It was built as much as a community center and gathering place as a place for borrowing books.”

Postcards from Falmouth: Falmouth Historical Society

Based right in the heart of town, the Falmouth Historical Society – also known as the Falmouth Museums on the Green – has a story for each feature of its historic campus, and a dedication to preserving those stories for future residents and visitors. Former director Mark Schmidt takes us on a tour through the Museums’ past, present, and future, with an emphasis on one important point: today’s events are history in the making.

“We tend to think that if it happened in our lifetime it’s ‘not cool,’ or just not that important,” he says. He points out that history doesn’t start and end with Colonial houses and 18th century French wallpaper: “We’ve gone through some pretty major things in our lifetime.”
