Family Friendly Friday Films

Our Friday Film series, with Classics in the fall and New Releases in the spring, has been a big hit! So big we’ve decided to try expanding the series with Family Friendly films for all ages. The films chosen are rated PG, so may not be appropriate for all children (parents get to make the call!) This could be a great opportunity for a grandparent-grandchild film date, or an event for the whole family, although a party of just adults is welcome too – aren’t we all kids at heart sometimes?

On Friday December 22 at 3pm we’ll be showing Elf, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. This day is the last day of school before the winter break, and is a half day for the public schools.

On Friday January 19 we’ll show the 2023 live-action version of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey.

Changes to Kanopy

Important changes are coming to Kanopy starting November 1st.

What will be changing?

Instead of play credits, Kanopy users will now be issued “tickets” every month.  Kanopy titles will be labeled with the number of tickets needed to watch them, and how long you have to view to the title.  Episodic content (i.e. TV Shows and Great Courses) will now be bingeable so you can watch an entire season or course using tickets based on the running time.  Check out the table below that breaks down the ticket requirements and viewing periods for Kanopy titles.

How many tickets will I get?

As a Falmouth Public Library patron, you will be getting 15 tickets a month to watch Kanopy content.  Kanopy Kids will remain unlimited views, as Kanopy Kids content will be ticket-free to watch.

When will these changes be taking place?

Kanopy will switch to the new ticketing system on November 1st.  When using Kanopy for the first time in November, either through its app or the website, a pop up will appear to walk you through the new ticketing system.

Film Screening: Stewart Udall and the Politics of Beauty

We invite you to join us for a screening of the documentary film Stewart Udall and the Politics of Beauty in the Hermann Room, on  Friday Oct. 13, 2023 at 3:00PM. The screening is free and open to the public. Following the film, documentary filmmaker John de Graaf will answer questions from the audience. We encourage you to REGISTER for this event.

This new 78-minute documentary celebrates the life and legacy of former Interior Secretary
Stewart L. Udall, arguably the most effective environmentalist in American history. He fought
tirelessly for the protection of our planet and its natural beauty and was the first public official to
speak out about global warming.

This beautiful film tells the inspiring story of Secretary Udall as an advocate of social and
environmental justice, international cooperation, the arts, and most of all, the protection of our
shared environment and magnificent natural beauty. The story highlights the bi-partisan success
of this unsung hero’s efforts, and calls on us all to move beyond the polarization of our time and
work together to protect our world’s natural heritage.

Udall pushed legislation through Congress mandating clean air and water, wilderness
preservation, pesticide restrictions, strip-mining reclamation, and the establishment of the Wild
and Scenic Rivers and National Trails systems, while providing greater self-determination for
Native Americans. The film explores the hard choices Udall had to make regarding both the
Vietnam War and plans to dam the Grand Canyon, which he helped ultimately stop.

This ground-breaking film goes beyond Udall’s accomplishments to explore the values that
motivated him, especially his concern for beauty and balance, as expressed in the Navajo
concept of Hózhó.

Friday Films Are Back!

Join us this Fall on selected Friday afternoons at 3pm as we screen classic movies from the 1940’s and 1950’s in the Hermann room!  These movie viewings are free to the public and are supported by the Friends of the Falmouth Public Library.

Climate Film Series: Chasing Coral

Join us on Tuesday July 18 at 6:00pm in the Hermann Meeting Room for a screening of the 2017 documentary film Chasing Coral. Come learn more about how a team of divers, photographers, and scientists set out to film the elusive process of coral bleaching – happening at an unprecedented rate around the world – and explore what organizations are now doing to help corals become more resilient. All are welcome and you may bring popcorn and covered drinks if you wish. A brief discussion will follow the film showing.  Please register.

Movies Under The Stars

The Falmouth Village Association will be showing double feature movies on the library lawn every Wednesday night at dusk (6pm-10pm) starting July 19th and ending August 16st! 

BYO blankets and chairs and join us on the library lawn to enjoy some outdoor family fun with Movies Under the Stars.  These movies are weather dependent and are free to the public.  No registration is required.

Kiss The Ground: Climate Film Screening

Join us on Tuesday April 4 at 6:30pm in the Hermann Meeting Room for a screening of the 2021 documentary film Kiss the Ground. Narrated by Woody Harrelson, this full-length (85 minutes) documentary sheds light on a “new, old approach” to farming called regenerative agriculture, a practice with the extraordinary ability to balance our climate and feed the world.

This film will be shown at 6:30pm on Tuesday March 4th in the Hermann Room; all are welcome and you may bring popcorn and covered drinks if you wish. Please register.

Kanopy Movie Club

A Book Club But For Movies!

The Falmouth Public Library has a new movie club!  It’s like a book club but for movies!  Watch the selected movie from the comfort of your own home prior to the movie discussion meeting using Kanopy which is free with your Falmouth Public Library card.  Then join us in-person at the library for an in-depth discussion of the movie.

The Kanopy Movie club meets on the last Thursday of the month from 3pm-4pm in the Bay meeting room.  This winter we will be discussing Award-Winning and Film Festival Nominees.  To register to attend a movie discussion, click on the registration links below or call Adult Services at 508-457-2555 ext. 7.
