This just in from Linda Collins, Assistant Director of the Falmouth Public Library:
“In searching the early editions of the Falmouth Enterprise online I read the following note in the Falmouth Locals column of the January 8, 1898 edition. ‘The Free Public Library gratefully acknowledges the receipt of Perry’s Trip Around Cape Cod from Mr. J. Arthur Beebe.’ I checked the library catalog and was happy to discover the book, although in a fragile state, still sitting on the shelf in our local history collection one hundred and sixteen years later. Thank you Mr. Beebe!
On page eighty-three of the book there is actually a photo of Mr. Beebe’s summer residence in Falmouth. I read further that he donated the money to build the St. Barnabas Church. Mr Perry, the author of the book said,
“May its donor live long to enjoy seeing this beautiful structure standing, as it does, so magnificently speaking of the kindness of his heart.”
You can read this book online as part of the Haithi Trust Digital Library.”
And if you want to know lots more about what Mr. and Mrs. J. Arthur Beebe, Miss Emily Beebe, Master Philip Beebe, and Mr. F.H. Beebe were up to in the town of Falmouth, just head over to the digital archive of the Falmouth Enterprise, which you will easily find at falmouthpubliclibrary.org The Reference Department was particularly taken with the news that Mr. J. Arthur Beebe, Mrs. Beebe and Miss Emily Beebe were on the 12th story of the St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco, at the time of the earthquake! Read all about it in the April 27th, 1906 issue of The Enterprise!
