2016 Falmouth Reads Together

About the book: Inspired in part by a real-life experiment in the 1930s, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves explores the boundary between human and animal beings and what happens when that boundary is blurred. It won the 2014 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

About the author: Fowler is the author of six novels and three short story collections, including The Jane Austen Book Club, which spent 13 weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list and was a New York Times Notable Book. Fowler’s previous novel, Sister Noon, was a finalist for the 2001 PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction.

“I began arguing with my father about animal intelligence when I was about six years old,” Fowler explained. “His conclusions were based on a career of cautious, scientifically collected data; mine were based on my personal observations of the family dogs and cats, birds and rats. …In many ways, this book represents my latest salvo in that long-running argument.”
