The Benefits of Creativity

Creating art is healing for the mind, body, and spirit.  Art is a powerful way to tell stories, heal, communicate and express joy and sadness.  Art is also considered a relaxing meditative distraction.  By nature, everyone is an artist, creative expression gives you the freedom to play, explore, and dream.  Although, many of us would say we are not “the creative type” we can all benefit from the process of creating.  

From a scientific point of view, creating art helps to stimulate new brain synapses, helps with memory, and relieves stress.  Art is a tool that will keep kids engaged and relaxed every time. 

Want to get started today, but you don’t have paints? Think outside the box, you can use food coloring, corn starch, coffee, berries or tea. 

Try this recipe for homemade paint:

1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup water

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, then place in zip lock bags with food coloring of your choice.  Cut off corners and get started on your abstract painting. 

The Falmouth Public Library has hundreds of classes you can take for FREE, many are art related.
