The library is really at full tilt. On Thursday we had a New England Revolution Soccer Player Khano Smith visiting (and learned that his favorite color is blue and his fifth favorite color is pink!), and last night there was a party to celebrate Stephenie Meyer’s fourth book in the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn. Both events were filmed by FCTV, so we hope you’ll all get a chance to see what’s been happening. There were SIX local bands playing last night! From all reports it was a great time, and we hope to see youtube videos and flickr photos soon. On Tuesday, August 5th is the Annual Summer Reading Ice Cream Party. Celebrate weeks of summer reading with a bit of dancing and a bowl of ice cream! Children who have participated in the summer reading program and their families are invited to the annual ice cream party. Your host, “Interactive” DJ, Brett “Outch” Outchcunis, will lead the party with dancing, (line dances, follow-alongs, etc.), games and of course, spinning your favorite tunes. And while I was out yesterday, I see that there was tremendous progress on our 2,000 piece puzzle in the reference room! So definitely something for everyone this week at the library.
By the way there is a review of READING THE OED One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages by Ammon Shea in tomorrow’s Sunday New York Times (or read it on-line now). This appears to be a Reference Book trend ... read a Reference Book and then write a book about you reading the Reference Book. You may recall The know-it-all : one man’s humble quest to become the smartest person in the world by A.J. Jacobs. (About Jacobs impossible quest to read the Encyclopaedia Britannica from A to Z.) If you would like to take a look at the actual volumes that inspired these two books, stop by the Reference Department, pick up one of the 20 volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary and enjoy one of our comfortable chairs with a view of Main Street. A lovely way to beat the heat! I know they are both available on-line, but for me nothing can beat turning the actual pages of an actual book.
And did I mention we had a visit from Flat Stanley last week?? Visiting all the way from South Carolina!
