Periodical Profile:  7 Cooking Magazines!

The warm weather is here!  It is a great time for grilling, adding fresh, seasonal produce to your menu and kicking back with a cold drink or frozen treat!  Tired of the same old hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream cones?  We have cookbooks galore in the adult collection room (call number 641) and look for the B-B-Q book display on the mantel near the circulation desk.  (FYI: You can always check out books on display.) Bon Appétit:  America’s Food and Entertaining Magazine
Bon Appétit is probably the most popular food and lifestyle magazine.  Its emphasis on healthy recipes, entertaining, travel, product reviews and kitchen design give it a broad scope and the high quality in all departments, give it a loyal following.  The R.S.V.P. section, in which readers can request the recipe for a dish they discovered at a restaurant, is a perennial favorite.

Cooking with Paula Deen
Paula Deen, a Food Network chef known for her Southern cooking and charm, brings her easy going style and delicious, “approachable” recipes to home cooks.  Entertaining, home décor and travel are hearty side dishes.

Cook’s Illustrated
This magazine is unique in the field of cookery publications with its absence of advertisements, dominant use of line drawings rather than photos, small number of recipes and the exhaustive testing and explanations that accompany each recipe.  It has been referred to as the Consumer Reports of cooking magazines because of its extensive testing of cookware products and foods.  Instructions are clear, easy to follow and focus on the how and why recipes work.

Cooking Light
Cooking Light “is a long-established health, nutrition and fitness authority” that inspires home cooks to eat smart and live a healthier lifestyle.  Recipes are tested and approved by registered dieticians and test kitchen professionals for optimal nutrition and flavor.  Stories are vetted by physicians, nutritionists and researchers.

Food and Wine
Features gourmet recipes paired with wine, beer and cocktails.  A second focus on entertaining and food related travel destinations, assumes an upper crust audience.

Food Network
Published in partnership with the Food Network on TV, this magazine features celebrity chefs from the TV programs and their gourmet dishes.  The illustrated recipe index is very handy.

Vegetarian Times
The best magazine on the market for vegetarian cooking.  With beautiful photographs and a focus on quick, easy and healthful recipes, Vegetarian Times encourages readers towards vegetarian choices for personal and global health.  Includes highly regarded natural product reviews.
