Earlier this week, our reference librarian, Donna B., posted a blog with wonderful ideas for summer reading. If you are a reader, then you should know about the two book clubs sponsored by the Falmouth Public Library. We have a fiction book club and a narrative nonfiction book club. Both clubs read one book a month and meet for an hour to discuss it with the expectation that you will come away understanding the book better than when you arrived.
Don’t let the word “club” give you pause ... anybody is welcome at any discussion, even if you haven’t quite finished reading. You don’t have to commit to coming to a certain number of meetings or anything like that. We just ask that you read the book and come prepared to answer questions that will draw out its special qualities and be open to others opinions. Over and over participants say, ‘I never would have chosen this book, but I’m glad I read it with the group - it was so great!’ or something like, ‘I didn’t really get what this book was saying, but now that we are talking about it, I see what the author was doing.” It’s true, sometimes group members don’t like a book, but they come back anyway because they always feel like they learned something and enjoyed the company. So, come try one of our upcoming book clubs! I bet you’ll discover something to like about them too. Follow the links below to see what we are reading for the next few months.
Oh, and on another note, we have a beach basket of paperback books in the adult collection room. This is a special collection of books that do not need to be checked out! Just take one, read it and pass it along or return it for someone else. We just ask that you take these to the beach and not our hardcover books. When beach sand gets into a hard cover book, it never comes out. Thanks for helping us take good care of our books.
Fiction Book Club (meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7pm and the Thursday after at 10am)
Narrative Nonfiction Book Club (meets the first Friday of every month at 10am)
